Everyday things like tensing when the phone rings, rushing to pick up the children from school or worrying about deadlines lead to physical and mental strain. Over the years, this accumulates and can cause illness, injury or common aches and pains that may seem to come from nowhere.
The Alexander Technique is a skill for self-development teaching you to change long-standing habits that cause unnecessary tension in everything you do.

How do I learn the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is typically taught through a series of private lessons. Over a course of lessons, your teacher introduces concepts and practices that expand your awareness of the functioning of your nervous system, muscular system and skeletal system. You’ll learn to restore optimal poise, balance and ease in overall functioning.

You will find endorsements by these people and others at many of the Alexander Technique web sites listed on this site, and in books and articles about the Alexander Technique. (Read a selection of Alexander Technique quotes.) The Alexander Technique has been featured in numerous magazines in recent years, including: Self Magazine, McCall’s Magazine, Glamour Magazine , Esquire Magazine, American String Teacher, InStyle Magazine, USA Weekend, New Age Magazine, Dressage Today, Yoga Journal and American Fitness and Catholic Digest. The Alexander Technique has gained a loyal following as a natural way to improve your posture, manage lower back pain, and reduce stress. Developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander in 1869, it focuses on practicing mindful sitting, standing, breathing, and even resting to naturally correct misalignment in our body and to let go of tension we may not even be aware we are holding.
You can use this technique whenever you wish to calm yourself, reduce stress, or have a better night sleep.

In practice, the schedule could be difficult to achieve in exactly the above format and it was negotiated flexibly with patients, as in the ATEAM trial. 12 The practical activities used, what was taught and the pupils’ progress and difficulties encountered were recorded on forms designed for the trial.
The teachers’ aim was to teach the Alexander technique and how to make use of it to reduce the intensity and frequency of poor habits and facilitate improvements in co-ordination, muscle tone and musculoskeletal use.

Records and interviews show the training sometimes is condensed and key points are lost. Five days of training might be reduced to a two- or three-day session when taught back in schools, according to training records obtained from districts through the Freedom of Information Act.
The law defines physical restraint as holding a student or otherwise restricting the child’s movement. The student can be standing, seated or lying down. A brief hold intended to keep students safe or to escort them from one place to another is not considered a restraint. Illinois law prohibits the use of mechanical restraints, such as straps or handcuffs, in schools.

I have said for a long time that the best way to keep a student from acting out and having a crisis/meltdown is to keep their mind engaged and body active.
At this point I almost lost it. A situation was mostly under control (I was in control until the teachers had intervened because the student had given up hitting me and was walking angily back to their desk to continue their work). Now I was in front of a time-out booth with a swearing, spitting, kicking child that was not at all interested in de-escalating.

The use of restraint must:
Actions that are not considered restraint include limited physical contact with a student to promote safety (e.g., holding a student’s hand), prevent a potentially harmful action (e.g., running into the street), teach a skill, redirect attention, provide guidance to a location, or provide comfort. Anyone who restrains a student must receive training within 30 school days, if not previously trained in restraint. The training must include prevention and de-escalation techniques, restraint alternatives, accepted practices and standards regarding behavior management.

She and co-workers can be at a loss for what to do when a student is hitting or biting them, she said, and restraining students is not allowed in their classroom. “We have no training on what to do in those instances, other than to stand there and take it,” she said. “I have bruises and teeth marks on me.”

Working with your teacher, you will learn to recognise your usual reactions to the stresses of life. You will find out how you have been contributing to your problems, how to prevent them and regain control.
The Alexander Technique is a skill for self-development teaching you to change long-standing habits that cause unnecessary tension in everything you do.

The Alexander technique teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed to help reduce and prevent problems caused by unhelpful habits.
It’s important to remember that most teachers of the Alexander technique aren’t medical professionals. They do not diagnose, offer advice on or treat conditions that should be managed by a suitably qualified mainstream healthcare professional.

Over the past few years we have made a number of exchange visits to other teacher training schools in Europe. Since our visit to Daniela Bottaro’s school in Vicenza, Italy in 2006 we have visited the Brighton Alexander College (Carolyn Nichols), made three visits to the Alexander-Technik Ausbildungszentrum in Munich (Mary Holland/ Alexander Hermann), the Ausbildungszentrum fuer Alexander-Technik in Berlin (Irmel Weber), and most recently in May 2015 to the London Centre for Alexander Technique and Training (Refia Sacks).

Karlskirche, Vienna

Results: With an overall response rate of 61%, 534 teachers responded; 74% were female with median age of 58 years, 60% had a higher education qualification, and 95% were self-employed, many with additional non-Alexander paid employment. The majority (87%) offered lessons on their own premises or in a privately rented room, and 19% provided home visits; both individual and group lessons were provided. People who took lessons were predominantly female (66%) with a median age of 48 years, and 91% paid for their lessons privately. Nearly two-thirds (62%) began lessons for reasons related to musculoskeletal conditions, including back symptoms, posture, neck pain, and shoulder pain. Other reasons were general (18%, including well-being), performance-related (10%, including voice-, music-, and sport-related), psychological (5%) and neurological (3%). We estimate that Alexander teachers in the UK provide approximately 400,000 lessons per year.
Design: A cross-sectional survey of 871 UK members of three main Alexander Technique teachers’ professional associations was conducted. A questionnaire requested information about their professional background, teaching practice and methods, and about the people who attend lessons and their reasons for seeking help.

  • muscle tension, back, neck or shoulder pain
  • posture or balance problems
  • poor self-confidence
  • breathing or voice problems, particularly for music and drama students
  • flexibility and timing for people involved in different sports activities
