The Alexander technique teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed to help reduce and prevent problems caused by unhelpful habits.

  • “how you move, sit and stand affects how well you function”
  • “the relationship of the head, neck and spine is fundamental to your ability to function optimally”
  • “becoming more mindful of the way you go about your daily activities is necessary to make changes and gain benefit”
  • “the mind and body work together intimately as one, each constantly influencing the other”

This annotated bibliography puts in more or less chronological order Robin Alexander’s publications to date on spoken language and dialogue in learning, teaching and education. It starts with observational and discourse studies undertaken in the UK during the 1980s and early 1990s. Then follows the Culture and Pedagogy international study out of which Alexander’s approach to dialogic teaching partly developed. Towards Dialogic Teaching presents this approach in detail, and Essays on Pedagogy extends the dialogic principle into wider aspects of education while reasserting the importance of an international perspective. Next come miscellaneous papers; evaluation reports from dialogic teaching development projects in UK schools during the early 2000s; the 2010 final report of the Cambridge Primary Review, which like Essays on Pedagogy gives dialogue prominence not only in pedagogy but also among education’s guiding aims; and the 2012 paper for the Department for Education (DfE) that persuaded the UK government to take spoken language more seriously in its framework for the 2014 revised national curriculum for England. The bibliography’s later entries relate to the 2014-17 randomised control trial sponsored by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) that demonstrated the efficacy of Alexander’s approach to dialogic teaching, and to a major paper re-positioning dialogue and argumentation for the era of ‘post-truth’ politics.
Now, building on all this work and on recent research in what is now a fast-expanding field, Robin Alexander’s dialogic teaching framework has been completely revised for his new book A Dialogic Teaching Companion, to be published by Routledge early in 2020. The book also includes a suggested professional development programme for implementing dialogic teaching, and it explores recent developments that have expanded and enriched the evidence and debate about classroom talk in relation to oracy, literacy, argumentation, student voice and philosophy for children as well as dialogic teaching itself.

As a person, viewed by historians, Alexander had a dark side. When he did not get his way, he would stomp around or disappear into his tent and pout or sulk for days. Sometimes, his behavior was much worse. He had a terrible temper, a dangerous one. From time to time, Alexander would arbitarily murder close advisors and even friends. Towards the end of his 13 years of power, he slaughtered thousands of people whose only crime was being in his way.
Because of the relative peace during the Hellenistic Age, travel and trade increased. Antipater of the city of Sidon, created a poem around 140 BC that listed seven wonders of the world. Antipater picked these buildings and statues for there art and architecture. The list became a set of tourist attractions for people of the ancient world.

what is alexander technique posture

what is alexander technique posture

For most people, Alexander technique lessons are safe and pose no health risks. No manipulation of your body is involved, just gentle touch.
The overall aim is to help you gain an understanding of the main principles involved so you can apply them to everyday life, allowing you to benefit from the technique without the need for frequent ongoing lessons.

The concepts we have of “shoulders back, chin up” (or similar) are usually distortions of our innate poise. We learn these “posture myths” when we are so young as to not have any discretion about its usefulness – or how we might attain such posture. Even if the model of “posture” we have is benign, the way we attempt to gain it can undermine the intention to improving posture. With no framework for matching concept with alignment, inappropriate effort is often recruited.
One’s initial observations of self may be simply that everything is normal – i.e. habitual. Alexander Technique forms a framework of intentions that initiate a change in tone and can be a catalyst to improving self awareness. At the same time as holding these intentions, one must refrain from actively making changes, as this will result in the same effect as habit. An indirect procedure must be employed to enable the body to utilise its innate postural mechanism.

Working with your teacher, you will learn to recognise your usual reactions to the stresses of life. You will find out how you have been contributing to your problems, how to prevent them and regain control.
Everyday things like tensing when the phone rings, rushing to pick up the children from school or worrying about deadlines lead to physical and mental strain. Over the years, this accumulates and can cause illness, injury or common aches and pains that may seem to come from nowhere.

I took private lessons regularly with Gwen Ellison (Bard College Conservatory of Music) in New York City for almost a decade, and for the past five years have worked with Jessica Wolf (Yale School of Drama), also undertaking study in her own method The Art of Breathing. I experienced some physical challenges with the birth of my son in 2009 – the ups and downs of pregnancy and parenthood brought into sharp focus the need to care for myself in order to meet a new set of demands. Back pain crept in, and I wished for a deeper understanding of the technique. In 2011 I entered the Teacher Certification program at Alexander Technique NYC under the directorship of John Nicholls and Nanette Walsh, completing 1600 hours of training over three years, and earned American Society for the Alexander Technique membership as a certified teacher (m.AmSAT) in 2014. I received Level One certification in The Actor’s Secret teacher training with Betsy Polatin in 2016.
I began studying the Alexander Technique to solve a performance problem. In 2000, as I was beginning my career in New York as a classically-trained soprano, my voice teacher observed some physical habits of collapsing that were affecting my vocal production, and referred me to an Alexander Technique teacher. After my first few lessons, I indeed heard changes in my singing – a fuller, richer, easier sound emerged. I noticed that a nagging shoulder ache from sitting at a desk at my day job disappeared. But my biggest eye-opener was the realization that the Alexander Technique was transforming my approach to daily life.

You learn to become aware of, and then gradually strip away, the habits of movement, tension and reaction that interfere with natural and healthy coordination.

Whatever your age or ability, the Technique can help boost your performance in any activity and relieve the pain and stress caused by postural habits, like slouching or rounded shoulders.
I had suffered from lower back pain for around six years and regular chiropractic wasn’t really helping me. It was only by chance that I saw an Alexander Technique course advertised and it turned out to be such a fantastic investment in myself. After my first lesson I had my first pain free week in six years!! Now that the course has finished, I have remained pain free.

You’ll need to attend a number of lessons to learn the basic concepts of the Alexander technique. Often, around 20 or more weekly lessons are recommended.

Put another way, we show our students precisely what they are inadvertently doing to themselves that gets in the way of their natural functioning – and then how they can sit, stand, move and perform their daily activities without unnecessary and harmful tension in their bodies.

“Most of us after the age of 3 or 4, learn tension patterns that interfere with the natural easiness, balance, support, and freedom of movement we all had as children. These tension patterns of slumping and so-called ‘good posture’ become so habituated that they feel normal; yet to whatever degree a person has one or both patterns, their movements are limited.”

Furthering the ground breaking work articulated by F.M. Alexander over a century ago, the Contemporary Alexander Technique is a practical, hands-on study of the principles of coordination, movement, habit, and awareness. Whether encountered in a private lesson or group workshop, the Alexander Technique teaches a student how to sense and apprehend habitual life patterns in order to relieve pain, tension, dis-ease, and unnecessary efforting. The result of this subtle and profound study is the re-discovery of ease, balance, strength, flexibility, grace, joy, excellence, and choice in every activity of life. Equally relevant for the Olympic athlete, concert pianist, homemaker, seventy year-old devoted gardener, or 8th grader with performance anxiety, the Alexander Technique invites each student to realize an innate sense of physical and emotional unity and wholeness.
“I found Alexander Technique life-changing. As a competitive dancer, I began lessons to improve my dancing, but quickly found myself immersed in a deeper study of how I move and think in every aspect of life, especially how habits are formed. For me, Alexander Technique brought together disparate areas of knowledge and unified them on the foundation of bodywork. Linda’s expertise as a professional dancer and her depth of experience in applying Alexander Technique to choreographic movement makes her an absolutely invaluable guide for a dancer of any discipline. My dancing transformed from a bundle of habits to a connected, easeful whole. I was better able to direct my energy to make my movement powerful rather than tense. I believe any dancer or athlete will notice a huge difference in their performance with Alexander study. In addition to being an excellent dance teacher and Alexander teacher for dancers, Linda has been tremendously helpful for me with body movement outside of dance, including in acting, singing, and everyday movement. The benefits extend far beyond my dancing. I often recommend Linda to people whether they have an athletic/artistic goal or not, because I believe anyone with a body will find Alexander Technique to be a breath of fresh air, and perhaps as transformative as I have.”

Alexander Technique offers tools to bring us into the present moment to undo patterns that can cause pain in the body. Pain is not inherently negative, it’s information. Pain serves a purpose, it tells us that we need to be protected. If the brain has concluded that you are threatened, endangered, and need protecting, it may send pain signals. We want this mechanism, it keeps up safe, it’s super useful when we put our hand on a hot stove. However, not all pain is in response to an actual threat. Often pain, especially chronic pain, is either a habitual response from your brain, or a response to the habitual way you are in your body. Alexander Technique gives you a variety of choices in relation to both those habitual responses.
How do you describe Alexander Technique to a friend?
